GSG Part 29 – Fenced square

Granny Square – Fenced square

All crochet patterns and terms I use are in UK, but if you want them in US then check out this handy stitch converter.

Materials:

  • DK yarn in various colours – I’m still using Stylecraft DK yarn that I got in my order from Deramores =D
  • 3mm hook
  • Embroidery or Darning needle ( for weaving in ends )

Skills used/required:

  • Double crochet (dc)
  • chaining
  • Half treble crochet (htc)
  • treble crochet (tc)
  • magic ring
  • Double treble crochet (dtc)

Gauge:

Final square = 12cm

Row 0: magic ring, ch 3, 15 tc into the ring. (16 stitches total)

Row 1: ch 1 * dc in the same stitch, ch 1 and sk st, 7 tc into the next stitch, ch 1 and sk st * . Repeat from * 3 times. Finish off with sl st into beginning dc. Fasten off (32 stitches total)

Row 2: attach new colour into any dc from the previous row. ch 4, (dtc, ch 5, 2 dtc) into the same stitch, ch 2, dc into st 4 of the 7 tc from the previous row, ch 2, * (2 dtc, ch 5, 2 dtc) in the next dc from the previous row, ch 2, dc into st 4 of the 7 tc from the previous row, ch 2 * . Repeat from * twice. Finish off with sl st into ch 4 of beginning 4 ch. (20 stitches total)

Row 3: sl st into the ch 5 space. * (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the ch space, dc in the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next two stitches * . Repeat from * three times. Finish off with sl st into the beginning dc. Fasten off (60 stitches total)

Row 4: attach new yarn to any corner ch 2 space. ch 4, (dtc, ch 4, 2 dtc) into the same stitch, ch 3, sk 4 stitches, dtc into the next stitch, ch 2, sk 2 stitches, dtc into the next stitch, ch 2, sk 3 stitches, dtc into the next stitch, ch 3, sk 3 stitches * . Repeat from * three times. Finish off with sl st into ch 4 of the beginning 4 ch. (28 stitches total)

Row 5: sl st into the ch 4 space. * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the ch space, dc in the next 2 stitches, 3 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 3 dc in the next ch space * . Repeat from * three times. Finish off with sl st into the beginning dc. Fasten off (84 stitches total)

Row 6: attach new yarn to any corner ch 2 space. ch 2, (htc, ch 2, 2 htc) into the same ch 2 space. htc in each stitch around, (2 htc, ch 2, 2 htc) in each corner ch 2 space. Finish off with sl st into beginning htc st. Fasten off (100 stitches total)
