GSG Part 33 – Sunburst square

It’s been another gorgeous Autumn day over here in Sussex; me and my dog Jasper had a lovely walk along the canal and then I got all christmassy and brought many christmas scented candles! I’m getting festive =)

Granny Square – Sunburst square

All crochet patterns and terms I use are in UK, but if you want them in US then check out this handy stitch converter.

Materials:

  • DK yarn in various colours – I’m still using Stylecraft DK yarn that I got in my order from Deramores =D – For this square we are double stranding
  • 4.5mm hook
  • Embroidery or Darning needle ( for weaving in ends )

Skills used/required:

  • chaining
  • Magic ring
  • treble crochet (tc)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)

Gauge:

Final square = 12cm

Row 0: Magic ring, Chain 3 (counts as 1 tc), two tr into the ring (making first shell stitch), chain 2 * 3 tr 2 chain . Repeat twice more from * , finish off with sl st into third chain of 3 chain. (12 stitches total)

Row 1: sl st into ch 2 space. Chain 3 (counts as 1 tc), (tr, 2 chain, 2 tr) into chain 2 space, * tc, skip st, chain 1, tc, (2 tr, 2 chain, 2 tr) into next chain 2 space. Repeat twice more from *, finish off with tc, skip st, chain 1, tc and a sl st into third chain of 3 chain. (24 stitches total)

Row 2: sl st into ch 2 space. Ch 5 (counts as 1 tc and a ch 2 space), 2 tc into the same ch 2 space, * skip 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch. You should now have what looks like the beginnings of a braid. Ch 1, skip 1 ch and 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch, (2 tc, ch 2, 2 tc) into the corner ch 2 space *. Repeat from * twice more. Skip 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch, ch 1, skip 1 ch and 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch. Finish off with tc into the first ch 2 space, sl st into third chain of 3 chain. (40 stitches total)

Row 3: sl st into ch 2 space. Ch 5 (counts as 1 tc and a ch 2 space), 2 tc into the same ch 2 space, * skip 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch, ch 1, skip stitch, tc into the next stitch, ch 1, tc into ch 1 space, ch 1, tc into the next space, ch 1, skip ch 1 and 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch, (2 tc, ch 2, 2 tc) into the ch 2 corner space *. Repeat from * twice more. Skip 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch,ch 1, skip stitch, tc into the next stitch, ch 1, tc into ch 1 space, ch 1, tc into the next space, ch 1, skip ch 1 and 2 stitches, tc into the next stitch, tc into the previous (skipped) stitch, then tc into the first skipped stitch. Finish off with tc into the first ch 2 space, sl st into third chain of 3 chain. (52 stitches total)

If your square doesn’t quite get up to 12cm then do a dc border all around the final row.
